Heel hooking is, after standing on small footholds, the most basic technical climbing skill. It is important to use the outer side of the heel when heel hooking. This allows you to get a better grip on the heel and link an imaginary chain in your body. Think of the heel as your third hand. This allows you to pull with your heel. Mobility of your ankles, knees, and hips is important when heel hooking. It is crucial to warm up your legs properly before climbing to prevent injury!
