Is it better to be tall or short for climbing? Surprisingly, being shorter can often be more advantageous for climbing than being tall. Statistically, male competition climbers are around 170 cm tall, and female climbers are approximately 160 cm. If you are significantly taller or shorter, you may need to consider whether pursuing a competitive career is the right path for you.

When climbing outdoors, you’ll need to accept that certain styles may never suit you perfectly, so it’s important to select your routes and boulders carefully. Shorter climbers often have strong fingers and excellent endurance, but they may encounter routes or boulders they simply can’t complete due to their height. Taller climbers, on the other hand, benefit from a longer reach but usually lack the same body and finger strength as shorter climbers. Even if they develop great strength, they may struggle with endurance. Taller climbers typically excel on shorter, power-endurance routes.

Regardless of your height, the key to improving is not avoiding the challenges that don’t suit you. Try bouldering with climbers of different heights – it can provide valuable insights and help you grow as a climber.
